The 2019 “Belt and Road” International Orthopaedic Forum – Spinal Deformity Senior Seminar sponsored by NATON ACADEMY was held in Pecking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) from January 14-17. PUMCH, as the partner of NATON ACADEMY, is a pioneer and leader in the field of spinal deformity in China which has always paid attention to academic exchange domestically and internationally, and its international influence has been expanding rapidly. Five experienced surgeons attended this seminar, Prof. Slavisa Zagorac from Serbia, Prof. Hesham Shaker from Egypt, Prof. Deepal K. Attanayake from Sri Lanka, Prof. Yousri Bouchaib and Prof. Mohamed Arihi from Morocco.

he four-day seminar arranged various academic activities which gave foreign surgeons a comprehensive and immersive experience. Operation demonstration and personal involvement are key points and highlights of this course. Surgeons followed PUMCH professors to visit the outpatients section, conduct pre-operative ward rounds, and communicate with patients, nurse team and anesthesia team to learn rules and regulations of operation. 

In addition, the teaching group also arranged various lectures and workshop. Director Jianguo Zhang elaborated on congenital, premature scoliosis, complex spinal deformity and so on. Through a large number of successful cases, he explained treatment difficulties and experience skills. Professor Qianyu Zhuang introduced the PUMCH classification of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, which is easy to understand and remember, and its principles of fixed segment selection is very practical. Dr. Siyi Cai demonstrated the practical operation and skills of IRENE TITAN system. These face-to-face lectures and hands-on operation benefit surgeons a lot.

After academic activities in PUMCH, surgeons visited IRENE factory and logistic center to learn the producing process of IRENE joints, spine and trauma series products. They also learned about NATON business model, production capacity and logistic services closely. 

Through this course, surgeons have conducted in-depth communication in professional fields and other aspects and built deep friendship with NATON ACADEMY and PUMCH. NATON ACADEMY looks forward to maintaining long-term contact with surgeons, deepening international friendship, conducting various forms of academic changes and making concerted effort to promote medical development worldwide.
